Yoga Chakra Colors to Activate Specific Energy: Muladhara & Svadisthana

yoga chakra colorsOur chakras are our centers of energy. When our chakras are activated, they can bring balance and a sense of connection to our lives. Depending upon where you are in your practice or in your life, you may wish to focus on one or more of your chakras. Each energy center has its own gifts, and awakening a particular chakra can have immense spiritual, physical, and mental benefits.

As you likely know, certain yoga positions correlate with certain chakras. The same is true of colors. The seven chakras build upward in the same pattern as the rainbow. Starting at the root of the spine, the first chakra – Muladhara – is composed of the color red.

The color red shares many characteristics with Muladhara. Red is the slowest color wavelength. It is the most dense color, and in many ways, the most powerful. We associate red with blood, with sex, and with authority. In the right light, red can make us feel vital and energetic.

One simple way to focus your Muladhara is to wear red clothing in your practice. Choose organic yoga clothing that feels comfortable and secure. Warm clothing like the kelly pant in chili or the varanasi longsleeve in oxblood is ideal for bringing your focus to the root of your spine.

Moving up your body and up the yoga chakra colors, the next center of energy is Swadisthana, or the sacral chakra. This chakra is composed of equal parts red and yellow. The resultant orange is a color of vitality and strength. The sacral chakra falls in the pelvis. This is where we feel so-called gut feelings. It is a center of wisdom and the voice of the self.

To connect with Swadisthana, choose to wear shades of orange that brighten your mood and bring a smile to your face. Try the OTM Halter in persimmon or the jojo short in punch. You can also use an orange scarf or light bulb to cast an orange glow throughout your practice space and awaken your sacral chakra.

This is the first of a three-part series on chakra colors. In our next piece, find out which colors awaken your solar plexus and heart chakras.
